Schubert urodził się na przedmieściach Wiednia w ubogiej rodzinie, jako dwunaste z czternaściorga dzieci. Jego ojciec był nauczycielem i on to właśnie rozpoczął edukację muzyczną syna. W wieku siedmiu lat Schubert został oddany pod opiekę Michała Holzera, organisty z parafialnego kościoła. W 1808 został stypendystą kapeli chłopięcej w Konwikcie Cesarsko-Królewskim w Wiedniu, gdzie śpiewał w sopranach przez pięć lat, aż do mutacji głosu. Studia kompozycji rozpoczął u Salieriego w 1812 roku. Po odejściu z Konwiktu, pracował jako nauczyciel, na wyraźnie życzenie ojca, a także by uniknąć służby wojskowej, lecz praca ta nie sprawiała mu żadnej satysfakcji. Okres ten był jednak najbardziej płodnym w życiu Schuberta (...).
